This long-established route from Jomolhari is a very spectacular trek offering you a high-altitude experience, unlike in most parts of the world. Kicking off with the amazingly green pastures and the captivating rich forests, you will then experience the breathtakingly stunning landscape, enclosed by the snow cladded peaks and the rich biodiversity, including the majestic Takin and Blue Sheep along with a wide range of birds.
En route, you will also pass by Lingzhi, the highest settlement in the north with a unique mountain culture.
Further, you will even witness the stunning mountain views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshrim Khang. From Lingzhi, you will descend to the lower valleys of Thimphu through varied vegetation and gorges formed by unique rock canyons.
You will finally end your trek in the northern part of Thimphu. Jomolhari Trek in Bhutan is definitely recommended for trekkers, wanting to explore the remote landscape of the eastern Himalayan range, that will not only give you an exhilarating adventure to embark on but also instill a sense of achievement and leave an everlasting impression after completion.

DAY 01: ARRIVE PARO
On arrival in Paro our agent’s representative will receive you and check you into your hotel. After lunch we will visit the National Museum and the Paro Dzong.
DAY 02: PARO
After breakfast, we will commence our hike to Taktsang Monastery. The trail is broad and the walk of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours uphill takes you high above the Paro valley.
The view of Taktsang Monastery built on a sheer cliff face 900 metres above the valley floor is a spectacular sight.
The great Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress when he brought the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th Century. In a nearby restaurant, you can stop for lunch.
A hike to this temple will take up most of our morning. In the afternoon visit old Kyichu Lhakhang Temple.
DAY 03 : PARO TO SHANA : 15km, 6hrs, 2800m
We will be met at this historic site by our trekking crew for the start of our trek at the Drukgyal Dzong. It was built in 1654 by the Shabdrung to commemorate one of the many war victories against the Tibetans. Follow the Paro Chu upstream through the village of Tshento on a dirt road for about an hour. Lunch will be served en route. We will have to pass through an army check post before reaching our camp, where your guide will produce your trekking permit.
DAY 04 : SHANA- SOI THANGTHANGKHA: 20km, 7-8 hours
The trail again follows the Pa Chu (Paro river), ascending and descending through pine, oak and spruce forests. After crossing a bridge to the left bank of the river, we stop for a hot lunch. Then we continue along the river, climbing upwards through rhododendron forests, and crossing the river once more before reaching our campsite (3,750m).
DAY 05: SOI THANGTHANGKHA - JANGOTHANG : 19km, 7-8 hours
The path ascends for a while until we reach the army camp. We then follow the river above the tree line, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Hot lunch is served at a yak herder’s camp. A short walk from here into the valley takes us to our campsite at Jangothang (4,040 m). From here, the views of Chomolhari and Jichu Drake are superb.
DAY 06: JANGOTHANG – LINGSHI: 18 km, 7-8 hours
The trail follows a gentle stream for half an hour and crosses a bridge to the right bank. We now start our climb up the first ridge, enjoying breathtaking views of Chomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tserimgang. The trail then takes us across a fairly level valley floor until the climb up to Nyele-la Pass (4700m). We descend gradually enjoying a panoramic view of the mountainous peaks and Lingshi Dzong from the pass until we reach our campsite at Lingshi (4000m). Overnight at campsite
DAY 07: LINGSHI – SHODU: 22 km, 8-9 hours
Our trail climbs up towards a small white chorten on a ridge above the camp, then turns south up the deep Mo Chu valley. The trail stays on the West side of this largely treeless valley, climbing steadily a short distance above the Mo Chu. It then crosses the river, and climbs steeply for two hours to Yeli-La (4820m).
On clear day you can see Chomolhari, Gangchenta, Tserimgang and Masagang from this pass. The trail then descends alongside a stream to a rock shelter in a cliff face.
It then continues on downstream until reaching Shodu (4100m), where we will camp in a meadow with a chorten in it. Overnight at campsite.
DAY 08: SHODU – BARSHONG: 16 km, 6-7 hours
Our path follows the course of the Thimphu Chu, descending through Rhododendron, Juniper and mixed alpine forests. There are stunning views along the way. We stop at the riverside for a hot lunch. Then the trail takes us gradually upwards to the ruins of Barshong Dzong (3600m), near which we camp for the night. Overnight at campsite.
DAY 09: BARSHONG – DOLAM KENCHO: 15 km, 5-6 hours
The trail descends gently through a dense forest of Rhododendron, Birch and conifers, then drops steeply to meet the Thimphu Chu. The trail runs along the left bank of the river, climbing over ridges and descending into gullies where side streams run down into the river.
The final stage of the trail climbs around a cliff face high above the Thimphu Chu, coming out onto Pastureland where we camp for the night at 3600m. Overnight at campsite.
DAY 10: DOLAM KENCHO – DODENA – THIMPHU: 8 km, 3 hours
The trail winds in and out of a side valley above the Thimphu chu, making a long ascent through a forest of conifers and high altitude broadleaf species to a pass at 3510m.
The trail then drops steeply down to the river, following it southward to the road head at Dodena (2600m).
Bhutan Travel Bureau transport meets us here, and we drive to Thimphu. Overnight at hotel in Thimphu.
DAY 11: THIMPHU
Explore Thimphu. Visit the National Memorial Chorten (monument), the Textile Museum, Folk Heritage Museum, Takin zoo, the National Library, the Government Handicrafts and the Handicrafts Emporium.
Overnight in Thimphu, altitude: 2400m
DAY 12: THIMPHU – PUNAKHA: 80 kms, 2.5 hrs
Drive to Punakha over the Dochu La pass at 3000m. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan until the 1950s. After lunch we will visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong which without doubt showcases the finest example of Bhutanese arts and crafts.
After the Dzong, we will go on a short drive in the lush upper Punakha valley and hike for 45 minutes to the beautiful chorten temple of Khamsum Yuley on a hill.
Overnight in Punakha, altitude: 1250m
DAY 13: PUNAKHA- PARO: 140 kms, 4 hrs.
Visit Chimmi Lhakhang, the temple of fertility, before back tracing our way to Thimphu for lunch. Drive to Paro in the afternoon.
Overnight in Paro, altitude: 2200m
DAY 14: DEPARTURE FROM PARO
Early morning flight from the Paro International Airport to Bangkok.
Accommodation
The standard hotels in Bhutan are almost 2 or 3 starred in the country. The standard hotels provides the basics and are maintained well. The luxury hotels are in the 4 & 5 star level and are most commonly located in Paro, Thimphu, Bumthang and Punakha.
Accommodation establishments are more modest with fewer amenities in the more remote areas of central (Gangtey, Trongsa, Bumthang) and eastern Bhutan (Mongar, Trashigang, Trashiyangtse, Samdrup Jongkhar). Sometimes the best accommodation can be a very modest one, especially in the central and eastern regions.

All our tours are escorted by well trained and knowledgeable local English Speaking Guides. Our guides are all certified and trained by the Tourism Council of Bhutan. There will be extra charges for German/French/Japanese guides. Since there are not many language speaking guides in Bhutan, advance booking will increase the confirmation of the language speaking guides.
